Howard Washington Thurman (1899–1981) was an influential American author, philosopher, theologian, educator, and civil rights leader who served as a principal architect of the modern, nonviolent civil rights movement. Raised by his grandmother, who had been enslaved, Thurman integrated deep spiritual mysticism with social activism. He is widely recognized as a key spiritual mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other prominent activists of the 20th century.
